Through field visits to Jilin, Anhui, Shaanxi, Qinghai, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Shanxi and Yunan provinces/ cities, this paper has made a comprehensive assessment on the sustainability of IFAD poverty reduction projects in China in the following five aspects: poverty reduction, food security, environment and natural resource management, capacity building, and institutional building. Major findings include: IFAD projects have (1) a good sustainability in poverty reduction, food security and environment and natural resource management; (2) a great impact on capacity building to different degrees in China: project management level > community and beneficiary levels > government level and; (3) a fairly good sustainability in institutional building except the role of VIGs, which will disappear as the project implementation completes. Finally, it proposes relevant policy implications.
