Abstract
This article reviews and summarizes the popular theories, methods and tools being used to evaluate R&D performance in China, as well as their limitations and drawbacks. Based on it, and referring to practice abroad, some promising approaches and trends are introduced by which to evaluate R&D performance effectively in the coming knowledge-based economy era
