This paper presents edge detection using a hexagonal mask which has been adapted for Cartesian coordinates. The resulting two masks, for the two orthogonal directions in the hexagonal coordinates, are also orthogonal in the Cartesian coordinates. Not only is the presented edge detector faster than the traditional Sobeland-Prewitt detectors, it also performs better overall
