  • Abstract
Early guidelines and regulations concerning the exposure of personnel to radio frequency (RF) and microwave radiation were based on field intensity (or power density) limits. During the 1970s, however, specific absorption rate (SAR) was consistently shown to be a better index for describing RF and microwave bioeffects, and SAR has become the basis for the present ANSI standard. Typical SAR-based exposure standards specify limits on both localized and whole-body average SAR. Logically speaking, therefore, on-site SAR measurements should be used in the determination of compliance. A prototype system for measuring both localized and average SAR in the field is presented. The system uses thermometric and calorimetric methods with a portable full-size human model.<>
