China has a huge internal IT outsourcing industry. Industry commentators have predicted that this capability can be leveraged to capture an increasingly large share of the global IT outsourcing market. Obstacles include a fragmented market, and business process that are immature or incompatible with those of Western companies. In this qualitative multiple case study, we investigate eight outsourcing partnerships between Chinese companies, using the outsourcing contract as the unit of analysis for benchmarking against western IT outsourcing best practice. We find significant gaps between the outsourcing contracts employed in our case organisations, and best practice guidelines, especially with regard to incentives and gain sharing. Some possible explanations for these gaps are offered, and areas for future research are suggested.
