Abstract
The development of a biomedical engineering (BME) training program at over the last 18 years is discussed, focusing on aspects related to the health situation in Brazil. This analysis leads to the introduction of a conceptual framework for BME training that could be of relevance for developing countries. A major element is a shift from a technical approach to clinical engineering to an epidemiological perspective, where one of the most important components is the development of diagnostic procedures.<>
