Abstract :
In this paper, we present research trends of communication protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) focusing on application services´ traffic condition features. We first outline the application services´ traffic condition features and design challenges for communication protocols in WSNs. Focusing on these traffic condition features, synchronous and asynchronous MAC protocols, flat and hierarchical routing protocols, cross-layered protocols in WSNs are studied and their performances are evaluated. Finally, we highlight critical requirements for communication protocols design of WSNs considering these application services´ traffic characteristics and discuss future research directions.
