Abstract :
A new method based on wavelet theory has been developed for low bit rate coding of image. The wavelet transform results in a logarithmic division of frequency space which can be justified by relevance to human visual system models and allows each frequency band to be efficiently coded. In order to achieve low bit rate, two new coding schemes respectively based on scalar quantisation (SQ) and vector quantisation (VQ) have been proposed. The comparison with other previously published results indicates that these tow new methods are competitive
