Abstract :
Summary form only given. We report the systematic study of the effect of pulse length on X-ray production in cluster targets. The effect of pulse length on soft X-ray production in argon is shown. The clusters are formed from a supersonic gas jet backed with 600 psi Ar. Approximately 4 mJ of energy is focused with an /spl theta/3 paraboloid into the jet. The energy is kept constant in these data. X ray yield is maximum when the pulse length is 400 fs. In agreement with theory, this optimal pulse width is dependent on cluster size.
