Title :
Vector control: a practical approach to electric vehicles

Abstract :
The Wavedriver is a new type of vehicle power control centre which carries out all the power conversion and vehicle control functions needed for an electric vehicle (EV). The unit performs the vehicle traction drive, high rate charging, driver interface, battery management and other ancillary functions. Using the same components for multiple functions reduces cost; for example, the same power electronics are used for both motor drive and charging. Because of the integrated and highly software-based nature, adaptation to the needs of different vehicle platforms is convenient. The Wavedriver hardware platform consists of a three-phase full bridge built from liquid cooled IGBT modules. The drive is configured for induction motors. These are usually liquid cooled. A vector control scheme is used which is based on a rotor flux indirect field orientation approach. The entire control system is implemented digitally on low cost processors. To meet stringent vehicle safety standards the software is designed to UL1998 standards
