Abstract
DEPES is a highly flexible software environment for the development of rule components in text-to-speech systems. It offers the user a powerful knowledge-representation language which is carefully designed to combine high flexibility with ease of use. Several aspects of this rule language are discussed. DEPES provides several development utilities, such as a compiler, a linker, and a debugger. The DEPES system was used successfully for the development of a Dutch text-to-speech system
