Abstract :
The authors present a number of innovative computer architectures, the ambitious fifth-generation computer project of the Japanese, and how the US is responding with advanced computer systems, development, and architecture. They also present the possible benefits that medical computing can derive from such developments as integrated services digital network, electronic data interchange, databases of the future, the impact of microcomputers, and supercomputer projects. Cushioned levels of preparation and readiness for 21st-century changes in biomedical computing and fully automated hospital systems are identified. Finally, the authors outline the dangers of medical computing unpreparedness and illiteracy.<>
