Abstract :
Wheel flats and out-of rounds (OORs) are defects that can cause high impacts that impart damage to track and equipment. This paper presents an analysis of data gathered from wheel impact load detectors on the Union Pacific Railroad and data gathered from the Transportation Technology Center Inc. (TTCI) Wheel Defect research Consortium. The formation of wheel flats can occur with or without the formation of tread defects. Each of these mechanisms is discussed separately.
