Abstract :
The Power Delivery Network (PDN) in a Global Positioning System (GPS) SiP was studied in this paper. Each of power/ground planes was replaced by a novel embedded low-pass filter for multi-level power design. The equivalent circuit model, full-wave simulation and experiment were used to analyze the low impedance performance of this novel low-pass filter. A simple equivalent circuit model of normal signal theoretically showed that impedance matching, low parasitic parameters of transition via and the continuity of return path were the main factors for signal integrity (SI). To improve the signal quality, a ldquocoaxial likerdquo structure around one signal line was designed to shield the simultaneous switching noise in the RF chip and to protect signal energy radiation in the digital chip. The optimal insertion loss of digital and RF signal were less than -0.5dB. At last, some guidelines were summarized for mixed signal system especially high frequency and high speed system design.
