Abstract :
In the paper, topical problems of photonics education such as the extension of micro/nano-electronics curricula are analyzed. The concept of using optical processes to perform various functions is known as optoelectronics, electro-optics or photonics, and represents a new area for the future. Photonics harnessing the potential of light across a broad spectrum of applications including communications and information processing and optoelectronics is the alliance of optics and electronics. Photonics has been identified as a key technology influencing a wide range of innovative products in communications, transportation, medicine, manufacturing, construction, computing security, and defense. It is generally expected that optoelectronics and light (photons) will replace electrons as the principal information carrier in the near future. Some aspects of photonics education in master and PhD Microelectronics study programmes at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava Slovakia are discussed.
