Abstract :
The fundamental principle of a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is expatriated, the characteristics of the NOLM is studied. Firstly, we find that NOLM has a function of compressing optical pulse width, self-phase modulation (SPM) in NOLMs is a crucial reason. Because the optical Kerr effect is instantaneous (2/spl sim/4 fs), this function of the NOLM is potentially applicable for high-speed optical fiber transmission systems.
