Abstract :
A simple tapered directional coupler with a five-layered structure is employed for mode conversion between a single-order and higher-order modes. As a result, we confirmed that the first several modes in the tapered waveguide shift to single-order mode with high conversion efficiency by use of computer simulation, and observed the streak patterns of mode propagation experimentally.
