  • Abstract
Bus lanes were one of the main means of giving priority to buses, increasing their reliability, and making buses more attractive because the bus might travel to its destination faster than a car. But bus lanes have to be enforced. The police can enforce bus lanes, but it is an inevitable consequence of a police officer stopping a vehicle driving in a bus lane that often causes the congestion itself. The sheer practicality of waving down a vehicle in a bus lane and taking enforcement action delays buses still further. An alternative had to be found. The camera seemed to be the solution. Transport for London´s vision for the future is the complete and continuous enforcement of all traffic regulations on its network and, in partnership with the boroughs, on their network. Its vision is for a digital basis for this enforcement and effectively for virtual real time enforcement by using the airwaves for the transmission of data.
