Abstract
The paper describes the application of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique to solve optimal power flow problems in flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is used as a Phase Shifter and Series Compensator to regulate both the angles and magnitude of branch voltages. PSO coupled with PQ power flow, determines the best solution to minimize the real power loss and keep the power flows within their secure limits. The algorithm is illustrated by using modified IEEE 30 bus system.
