Abstract
Results from sea trials of the new Kongsberg EM 2040 multibeam echo sounder is presented. This wideband, high frequency echo sounder is described in detail. The echo sounder is designed to meet IHO Special order requirements both for accuracy and object detection. The frequency range from 200-400 kHz gives the possibilities for hydrographic mapping down to 500 meter water depths using the lower part of the frequency range. For intermediate water depth the middle part of the frequency band is used for hydrographic surveying. Detailed inspection work can be performed using the high frequency ping mode where the large bandwidth allows the use of short pulse lengths.
