Abstract
Sustainable design approaches consider the environmental impacts of products during their whole lifecycle. The application of sustainable design leads to the development of more environmentally benign products and processes. Principles and methods of sustainable design are discussed in this article. The goals of sustainable design are reducing or minimizing the use of non-renewable resources. The aims and the scope of sustainable design should not be developed separately from those of traditional design. Instead, they should be an evolution and an extension of traditional design. Sustainable design without any cultural meaning or aesthetic considerations will not be acceptable by the society at all.
