Abstract
We present a generalized sphere decoding (GSD) algorithm and its application for detecting information symbols in the case where one has a system with more inputs (symbols) than outputs or the opposite situation. We study the special case of a multi-antenna scenario in a cellular system with N antennas at the mobile and M⩾N antennas at the base station. GSD reaches the maximum likelihood (ML) performance for both up and down link with a moderate complexity
