Abstract :
During the ARTIST (Arctic Radiation and Turbulence Interaction Study) experiment, conducted at the Svalbard islands in the spring of 1998, some measurements of radiative balance at the surface and temperature gradients within the ice and snow cover were collected. The analysis of the radiation data allowed calculation of the surface radiation budget of the short- and long-wave radiation as well as the net availability of energy at the surface. Because of the crucial role played by the Arctic on the global climate results of paramount importance to assess the both the radiative and the energy balance of the entire area. Satellite data were utilised to obtain further information about cloud amount, sea-ice extent and radiation balance. In order to upscale the local findings a parameterisation scheme was developed to compare surface with satellite measurements
