Abstract
Summary form only given. A measurement of the absolute phosphorescence emission per particle for (Y/sub 0.86/Yb/sub 0.08/Er/sub 0.062/O/sub 2/S) upconverting phosphor particles as a function of excitation intensity is shown. The phosphorescence cross section is equal to the ratio of the emitted power to the excitation intensity. The phosphorescence cross section for upconverting phosphors is a strong function of excitation intensity. The intensity dependence of the phosphors is separately measured on powder phosphor samples. To minimize thermal effects on this measurement, the powder phosphor samples are rotated in the laser beam. The spot size of the laser is measured with a CCD camera.
