Abstract
The design and simulation of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are provided in this paper. The designed motor is used in a two-stage cryocooler for application in zero boil-off and long duration storage of liquid hydrogen systems. The motor has output shaft power of 2000 W at 200,000 rpm and at the cryogenic temperature of 77 K. Sizing equations are often used in motor design to optimize the dimensions to get best power density performance. However, for super-high speed machines, mechanical stress and rotor dynamics also need to be considered to finalize the dimensions and optimize the performance.
