Abstract :
Summary form only given. We report the demonstration of optical limiting of long-pulse cw lasers using methyl red dye-doped nematic liquid-crystal films in a self-defocusing configuration. The nonlinear mechanism employed is a recently discovered extraordinarily large nonlinear optical effect associated with optically induced liquid-crystal director axis reorientation and the resultant refractive-index change.
