Abstract :
Differential and Integral calculus are among. the subjects at high school ("Bachillerato") which cause the highest students\´ failing rate; therefore, new didactic elements for the teacher must be found. We have observed that expert systyem properties, such as justifying answers and finding another solutions, can be useful in designing expert systems which can facilitate the teaching-learning process in Differential and Integral Calculus. In this article we introduce a proposal for teaching: an expert system,"ESYSIT", written in Prolong, which finds solutions to symbolic integrals as well as teaches the classical procedures of integration. The areas contained in this works are knowledge-based systems, intelligent tutoring systems, expert systems, knowledge engineering, knowledge representation, and differential and integral calculus. At the present this system is being used in Differential and integral calculus courses for high school level at Centro de Estudios Universitarios Londres (CEUL). We call this system "expert" (among other reasons) because Master Science Professor Miguel Angel Pizaila Lopez, who began studying calculus at 15, contributes with his experience to find the solutions of integrals. This is the experience and knowledge we try to show in ESYSIT. At the present further research on the subject is being performed so as to create ESYSITDE, a system which solves and teaches differential equations.
