  • Abstract
    An expert system for road extraction from remote sensing image was proposed to increase the efficiency of road mapping. It is designed based on the technology of image processing and machine vision. This approach obtains the basic characteristics of the road with the expert experience to simulate the process of visual interpretation from remote sensing image. The performance of this expert system can be enhanced by modifying and improving the knowledge base. Moreover, on the base of the characteristics of the road, the expert system can perform fundamental image processing, update the rules, and modify the inference engine methods according to the understanding of experts. The successful application verified its effectiveness.
