Abstract
Summary form only given. We present the first demonstration, we believe, of all-optical switching using a semiconductor nonlinearity in a single arm interferometer (SAI). The SAI is insensitive to long-lived nonlinearities and, with a minor modification, allows for generalized logic functions without the use of an additional control stream. We have demonstrated a 10-Gb/s demultiplexer and inverter using an semiconductor laser amplifier in a SAI. Bit-error-rate measurements have been performed and power penalties of 1.7 dB and 3 dB were obtained for demultiplexing and inverting, respectively. We are investigating the scalability of this device to higher rates.
