Abstract :
Summary form only given. The /spl alpha/-DFB laser design contains an embedded diffraction grating that is angled with respect to the laser facets and a contact stripe aligned parallel to the grating teeth that extends the length of the cavity. The epitaxial structure is otherwise similar to that of a conventional DFB laser diode. The gratings provide lateral optical confinement by virtue of multiple diffraction events that occur as the light traverses the cavity.
