Abstract
This paper reports on extensive experimental activities and related modelling for the characterization of the ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) channel in a typical "sub-urban" environment. We first present the experimental setup and describe the methodology-used for channel sounding. Then, statistical models are presented, as derived after post-processing of collected and "cleaned" samples. The main achievements can be summarized as follows: i) the path-loss exponent varies from 2.5 to 3.5 and depends on the height from the ground floor of transmission and reception equipments, ii) the statistics of the first received echo in the small-scale analysis can be modelled through a log normal or a gamma distribution; and iii) the delay spread in the small-scale multipath scenario ranges from 7 ns to 32 ns.
