  • Abstract
Summary form only given. We report on the first observation, to our knowledge, of the photorefractive effect in BaTiO/sub 3/ at 1.5 /spl mu/m using ultrashort, intense pulses. This effect can be important for applications in optical communication. BaTiO/sub 3/ is one of the most important photorefractive materials due to its large electrooptic coefficient. Attempts have been made to extend the spectral response of BaTiO/sub 3/. In this work we show that two photon absorption (TPA) can be used to extend the spectral range of the photorefractive effect to the 1.5-/spl mu/m regime.
