  • Abstract
    An approach to teaching problem solving that relies on generative learning environments is discussed. These generative learning environments are created via videodisc and microcomputers and have been developed for the domains of mathematics and science. The approach is based on theory and research that emphasize the importance of anchoring instruction in meaningful, problem solving contexts that allow one to simulate in the classroom some of the advantages of apprenticeship learning. The goal is to use the video environments to motivate students to learn formal domain knowledge that they then use as a tool for solving problems presented in the video. In the process, students are provided with models of the function of this domain knowledge
