Abstract
The design of an automated drug identification system (ADIS) is described. The intent is to show the feasibility and usefulness of a product that can monitor the type of drug administered to a patient and its dosage. The drug is identified by a bar code reading system. Dosage is calculated using both customized hardware and software. This was an experimental effort to develop a more versatile ADIS monitor. The ADIS monitor is a user-friendly method of drug dose verification that could enhance patient safety and facilitate automated anesthesia record keeping systems
