            Abstract :
The authors describe a novel AC/DC drive for starting vehicles driven by internal combustion engines, and for supplying energy to the ever-increasing electric loads. The system consists of a squirrel-cage induction machine which operates in both the motoring and the generating modes, and a power conditioner capable of inverting, rectifying, and providing excitation to the machine, depending on whether it is working as a motor or as a generator. The special features of the drive system and its control strategy are presented, with emphasis on the machine design
