Abstract
The author presents a new graphical interpretation of Shannon´s famous expression for the tradeoff of the signal to noise ratio E b/N 0 and bandwidth efficiency C /W on a bandlimited Gaussian channel. It is shown that the minimum E b/N 0 required to reach the Shannon ideal is the area under the curve t α between t =1 and t =2, where α=C / W -1. It is pointed out that this interpretation offers tutorial advantages over existing approaches
