  • Abstract
Summary form only given. The development of all-optical switches based on organic polymers is of great interest in photonics. An effective nonlinear n/sub 2/ coefficient may be obtained by cascading of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility. A large /spl chi//sup (2)/(2/spl omega/;/spl omega/,/spl omega/) effect and quasi-phase-matching is achieved in polymeric waveguides by a spatially periodical electric poling field in the direction of light propagation. We have calculated numerically the change of intensity and of the nonlinear phase shift of the fundamental frequency wave for a waveguide of given length as a function of the phase-mismatch and of the "gain amplitude". The results are represented by means of contour plots.
