Abstract
Some critical issues in the development of a performance standard for surge arresters and suppressors for use on low-voltage mains are discussed. There are two general goals in a performance standard for surge protective devices: to describe how to test and specify protective equipment so that devices from different manufacturers can be compared, and to establish performance limits that will exclude ineffective or possibly dangerous products from the marketplace. A series of electrical tests to determine the safety and adequacy of surge protective devices is described
