            Abstract : 
The effect of metallic armature bandings on the commutation of a d.c. machine is investigated. Based on a simplified electromagnetic field analysis, it is shown that the bandings act like quasi-interpoles, and thus affect commutation. An experiment is described to support the validity of the analysis, therefore justifying the fact that bandings affect commutation, as observed qualitatively.
