  • Abstract
Four-wave mixing (FWM) is observed to cause crosstalk and distortion of subcarrier-multiplexed (SCM) optical signals in a wavelength-division-multiplexed lightwave link with only two optical channels. The crosstalk, composite-second order (CSO) distortion, and composite-triple beat (CTB) distortion are predicted with a simple model and compared with experimental data. They depend not only on the power of the FWM products but also on the ratio between them. For some power ratios of the first-order products, the FWM-induced crosstalk or distortion goes to zero.
