            Abstract :
This work presents an approach for the computation of resonant modes in quasi-guided waveguides by the finite element method. In this approach, a spatial transformation maps a large external domain, surrounding the guide core, onto a smaller domain containing the waveguide region. Only a few modifications of conventional finite element codes are required to apply the spatial transformation scheme, which can be used in the presence of material nonhomogeneities as well as anisotropies. A weakly guiding optical waveguide is analysed by this scheme and the modal solutions are compared to those obtained by the infinite element and the boundary impedance condition techniques
