Abstract
Premium efficiency 50-Hz motors can be designed either starting from original 50-Hz designs or from 60-Hz designs. There are still differences between the NEMA and the proposed IEC values, but the magnitude of the opportunity is clear. If higher-efficiency IEC motors were available, considerable savings would be seen in industrial facilities operating at 50 Hz. These cost savings can only be realized by manufacturers making motors available at premium efficiency levels and by users asking for and purchasing them as they become available.
