Abstract
FPGA technology is applied to form an advanced drive system for permanent magnet synchronous motors, incorporating a robust speed control strategy and a sliding mode current control loop. This improves the dynamic performance and this is further enhanced by using the FPGA to implement parallel, asynchronous algorithms. Practical issues are discussed, supported by simulation and experimental results, comparing the new speed control law with a conventional one. Issues to be resolved in paving the way to a new generation of electric drives are highlighted.
