Abstract
Total of 168 marine bacteria was isolated from different marine organisms taken from Pulicat lake, coromandal coast in South India. Antibiotic production by these strains were tested against five test strains, viz., Escherichia coli, Khbsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans. The strain was found to exhibit broad spectral activity exhibiting antibacterial activities. The highest zones of 14mm and 9mm were noted against two bacterial strains, S. aureus and Kpneumoniae respectively. The culture broth was ethanol precipitated, and the activity was noted in the precipitate (crude extract). MALDI-TOF data showed the mass range of the compound. This study highlights the importance of epibiotic bacteria associated with marine organisms as a potential source for the discovery of novel natural products.
