Abstract :
All the published work on planetary gear trains (PGTs) pertains to the generation of PGTs without rating for other structural aspects like symmetry, parallelism, gear ratios, and so on. Use of fitness strings to identify symmetry in PGTs along with comparison of gear ratios and compactness at the design stage itself without actually testing them is explained.
