Abstract
This paper presents a novel compact microstrip antenna with EBG ground plane for high gain applications. A 25mm × 25mm microstrip antenna has been designed for a resonant frequency of 5.5Ghz and a slot of 18mm × 18mm is made for the improvement of bandwidth. Slots, even though improves the bandwidth, it will introduce unstable radiation pattern which results in backlobes. So the ground plane is replaced by metamaterial EBG structures to absorb the backlobes and to provide a unidirectional radiation pattern with high gain. L-shaped strips are introduced in the diagonally opposite corners of the patch to provide circular polarization. The antenna provides a gain of 7.2dBi and an impedence bandwidth of about 400Mhz around 4.9 and 5.5 Ghz.
