            Abstract : 
The explosive growth of Internet traffic is stressing both the transport and processing capabilities of backbone networks. Transparent optical networking employing ultra-long-reach dense-WDM transport and all-optical cross-connects is shown to provide a scalable and economic solution to this problem.
