Abstract :
This paper proposes a design methodology to improve the converters´ efficiency applied to photovoltaic systems, where the DC/DC boost converter employed to track the maximum power is valuated. The design is based on the operating point selection (Δi @fs), as well as in the choice of the magnetic materials and semiconductors which results in better performance for application in photovoltaic systems. The optimum operation point will be one that presents the best weighted average efficiency for the annual occurrence of solar irradiation. Unlike the conventional method, in which the design is optimized for the rated power. This methodology is carried out considering the data of this specific of Sào Martinho da Serra station, Brazil. However, the proposed methodology can be applied to any region around the world, through the annual irradiation data. A 600W prototype was built to validate the methodology for four operating points, proving that the selected point is the best among them. Finally, a comparative analysis is presented between two designs, one using the proposed methodology and other using conventional methodology. Volume and costs are not considered at this work.
