Abstract :
We describe a systematic design method for animated character interfaces. In this method, we analyze and identify motion patterns, develop a database encoding scheme, and create a tool called Character Composer to support the authoring of character animations. To validate the effectiveness of the database and tool, Character Composer was used to create animation scenarios for three dialog systems. From this, we found that the motion pattern database coverage was more than 80%, and that Character Composer could easily create character animations. We supposed that the animations would be effective in communicating information to users
