Abstract :
AstroTerra is designing and prototyping quickly deployable, portable laser communication (lasercom) terminals which will be appropriate for military applications including naval ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore and army site-to-site communications. Lasercom is particularly well suited for these applications because of its high bandwidth, very low probability of interception, and its undetectability. In addition, the military is willing to tolerate the occasional weather outages that occur with lasercom in trade for the advantages it offers. Other terrestrial applications for portable lasercom include embassy-to-ambassador inter-building links, emergency links during disaster relief, and telecommunications backbones in situations where fiber installation is time or cost prohibitive
